What is Google Adwords? How does Google Adwords work?

Google Adwords is basically a PPC(pay-per-click) advertising campaign, which means that anyone can advertise their websites on the internet for people to visit and go through their products or services. Adwords displays your website ads through Banners or links on various websites, and whenever a visitor sees your ad and clicks on your ad to see your website, you need to pay Google. Google charges meagre amounts for displaying ads, for each ad click. For example, if you have started a retail shopping business and created a website for your shop, you can advertise it on the internet for people to know about your shop.

What are the Benefits of using Google Adwords?

Unlike other modes of advertisements such as TV, magazines, Newspapers which target a limited audience, Google Ads can target the entire people around the world.

Further, the great benefit is that you don't have to pay for displaying your ads. You need to pay only when someone clicks on your Ad. Now, that's really a great benefit. Unlike other advertising modes like TV and newspapers which charge you just for displaying your ad, Google charges you only when an interested visitor clicks on the Ad to view your product. Additionally, as your Ads are displayed continously across thousands of websites, people will get familiar with your website, that even if they ignore your Ad during the first few days, they will certainly be drawn to check your ad, out of curiosity.

Cost -
You only pay when a user clicks on of your ads. Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising is very cost effective This means that you only ever pay if the visitor actually comes to your site. By them clicking your advertisment it proves that they are actually interested in the product that you are offering, and are thus more likely to buy the product or service you are selling.

Relevant -
Google Adwords Ads are shown only when internet users are searching for the search terms that you specify as relevant to your site This means that you have complete control over which visitors you are willing to pay for or not.

Google has since expanded the program to include different charging models, i.e. cost-per-impression and cost-per-action, and advertising on non-Google websites, i.e. Search Partners (e.g AOL) and Content Network (Google Adsense participants). Google now also accept image ads, video ads and gadget ads, in addition to the original. text ads.

Thanks to the PPC charging model and higher conversion rates because of its keyword-based targeting, Google Adwords delivers higher ROI and making it arguably the most cost-effective advertising method available today.

What is Pay-per-click?

How much Does Google Adwords Cost?

Costs of Pay Per Click Advertising

Google AdWords costs can be controlled in several ways: through a daily budget; through Cost- per-click Bidding; and through a quality score.

Daily Budgets

A Google Adwords campaign can be setup using a daily budget (per campaign) and a one-time activation fee. This daily budget will determine how many times your advertisement can be shown each day when someone searches on your specific keywords. The amounts you spend are totally controllable and up to you. This budget can be adjusted as often as you like there is no minimum spend, although the greater your daily budget the more frequently your advertisement will appear. A low budget would result in your advertisement not appearing every time your key word is search on. Once your budget is reached for the day, your ads will stop showing fot that day.

Cost-per-click Bidding

Cost-per-click bids determine how much you are willing to pay every time someone clicks through to your advertisement after it shows up on a Goggle search. Organisations bid on specific keywords, the higher the bid the more likely the advertisement will be seen as a result of a search on that specific keyword.

Quality Score

All advertisements submitted for Google AdWords are measured for quality resulting in a ranking or score. This quality score is based on the relevancy of your advertisement, what keywords you use and the quality of your web site. Quality. Scores measure how relevant your keyword, ad group, and webpage is to a user's search. It helps determine when and where your ads appear. Also, the higher a keyword's Quality Score, the lower its cost-per-clicks (CPCs) and the better its ad position.

How does Google choose where my ad appears?

Google uses two criteria to decide where to place your ad relative to your competitors. Firstly, it uses the maximum price you've elected to pay. For example, you might indicate that you're prepared to pay no more than 5p per click. However, Google's success has been based on how relevant its search results are and this applies to the "sponsored listings" (those provided by Adwords) as well as the natural listings (those that are not paid for).

What this means is that Google takes relevance into account when it decides how high up the sponsored listings your ad appears. It does this by examining the text of the ad and comparing it to the phrase the user is searching on.
For example, let's imagine you sell digital cameras. Your competitor also sells them and his ad says something like:

Buy your Digital Cameras here
We stock the best range at the lowest price

If your ad says something like:
Sony Cybershot Digital Cameras
Buy Your Cybershot Digital Cameras here. Low prices, excellent service.

...then your ad will appear above your competitors if someone searches on "sony cybershot digital camera" if you bid the same price, or even, often, if your competitor bids more than you.

The exact weighting Google gives to the relevance compared to the price is not known but you should work on the basis that relevance is at least as important as price. It should be your target to appear above your competitors and paying less to do so.
